Houston Rally For Recovery

More than 1,000 individuals attended the Greater Houston Big Texas Rally for Recovery on October 1st at the Houston Botanic Garden.  The event featured many organizations and sponsors rooted in substance use treatment and recovery services, including Santa Maria.  Adding to Santa Maria’s special presence was the event’s fabulous emcee and Santa Maria Senior Director of Recovery Support Services, Lanisha Jiles.  Guest speakers included former NFL center, Randy Grimes and Justice Forward CEO, Devon Anderson who shared their personal recovery journeys.  Making the event extra special were proclamations from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announcing their support for the Big Texas Rally for Recovery.  Santa Maria is proud to support our recovery community and the Houston Rally for Recovery.

Serve Houston AmeriCorps

Program at Santa Maria

Serve Houston is a program of Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and is funded via the OneStar Foundation, Texas.  Serve Houston AmeriCorps program places teams of diverse, college-aspirational members at organizations across Houston to support programs promoting equitable and healthy futures for vulnerable populations.  Santa Maria is thrilled to have been selected as one of these organizations.  Between now and April 2023 Santa Maria will have three AmeriCorps members working twenty hours a week as part of this dynamic National service program.

Meet the AmeriCorps Members

Christianah Bello is a retired Registered Nurse and enjoys working with women and kids. Jason Leoncio is currently a student at Houston Community College in San Jacinto and in his free time he is a substitute teacher for Spring ISD. Ashley Robinson has recently moved to Houston from California. She chose to work at Santa Maria, because she is passionate about serving the recovery community by giving them a second chance, and working with the whole family is how she sees she can create a larger impact.

This group will be assisting in the implementation of an after-school program, Together Time.  Designed by Santa Maria staff and key volunteer, Robert Graham, Together Time is an after school program for elementary school aged Santa Maria residents and their mothers to engage and learn together via age-appropriate brain development activities.  This program has been developed through partnerships and funding from the Texas Change in Mind Institute.  The institute is made up of ten organizations from Texas, including Santa Maria with the goal of incorporating the latest science on how our brains are built and how they are shaped by adversity into the organizations that families rely on.  These ten organizations are being supported and challenged to rethink and redesign different components of their work to integrate brain science and strengthen their foundation of fairness.  Together Time will further these goals at Santa Maria.

With support from Santa Maria staff, volunteers, Serve Houston AmeriCorps members and other partners such as the Houston Children’s Museum, Santa Maria is excited to launch Together Time.
