Party Sober Partnership - H Town Chili Cook-Off Santa Maria is thrilled to assist in forming a new collaboration of powerhouse recovery organizations, called the Party Sober Partnership! ![]() The group came together with one purpose: provide fun, sober activities for our participants, alumni, and staff in recovery. With only a short time to plan and produce the first event, enthusiastic representatives from the 10 participating organizations got down to business and created an exciting kick-off. ![]() The inaugural event was the H Town Chili Cook-Off held February 26 at Fair Haven United Methodist Church. The parking lot was bustling with nearly 30 cook-off teams registered to bring their finest, beans or no beans. DJ Music set the mood and those lucky party-goers were soon moving from booth to booth sampling the chili entries on a cold and rainy day. It was definitely chili weather. Inside, there was live musical performances and 27 fantastic cornbread entries to continue sampling. ![]() Celebrity judges sat in the corner, chasing each sample with soda crackers, and somehow despite the incredible entries picked a winner! Smiles were everywhere and although the group was cold, their spirits were warm and lively. The event was a huge success and we are all excited for the next one! Included in the group were enthusiastic representatives from: The Phoenix, Justice Forward, Mercy Street, The Council on Recovery, Angela House, Santa Maria, SRC –Sober Recreation Committee, Houston Recovery Center, Houston Recovery Initiative, Open Door Mission and the recenter Houston.
Thank You Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church After a large volunteer group scheduled to come to Santa Maria to tackle seven different projects cancelled, staff scrambled to get those projects completed another way. One of the first calls for help was to our faith partners at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church (MDPC). ![]() It happened that the same weekend was “Church in the City” at MDPC, an extremely large event that was sending teams to volunteer all over the Greater Houston community. Melissa Peter, Local Outreach Director, answered our call and redirected one of the teams to paint an apartment between move-out and move-in and to assemble desks for our GED room. With just two days’ notice, a cheerful team of MDPC members arrived in our lobby, early morning, ready to tackle these projects and share the maintenance load with our staff. The room was brightened, the desks were built and our hearts were lifted! We are grateful to our committed partners and friends at MDPC, for ALL that they do for us.
